Start Signals

What is it?

The sensor itself can be a FinishLynx gun sensor, or any device which establishes a connection (normally open sensor) or breaks a connection (normally closed sensor) between pins 1 and 3 of the start cable.

The FinishLynx gun sensor detects a change in air pressure (caused by the sound of a gun) which breaks the connection between pins 1 and 3.

Cabling Specifications

The start cable is shielded 3-conductor cable.
  • Connectors are XLR-3
  • Bare/Shield wire should be covered with shrink tubing to prevent shorting, and soldered to the shield tab.
  • Belden 9533 cable meets the electrical requirements of the start system. For extreme outdoor conditions or permanent installations you may need to use a more durable cable that meets the same electrical specifications. Contact your local cable supplier for more information.
  • The cable can be used for runs as long as a mile

  • The pin assignments are:
    • Pin 1 = ground (black wire)
    • Pin 2 = 12V DC (white wire)
    • Pin 3 = data (red wire)

Troubleshooting

I get the message “All gun sensors failed to arm”
You must specify the appropriate sensor for the camera which is connected to the sensor. Select the Input tab in your camera information window and select the sensor.

I still get the message “All gun sensors failed to arm”
Check your cables and connectors for visible signs of damage. Check that the connection box is securely connected to the camera. Connect the gun sensor directly into the connection box and verify that the sensor is functional.

I get the message “Some gun sensors failed to arm”
One camera’s sensor has armed correctly, but you have specified that more than one camera has a sensor. Set the sensor type to None for all cameras without a sensor.

The sensor armed, but did not detect a start
Check that the connection box is securely connected to the camera and connect the sensor directly into the connection box and verify that the sensor is functional.

Note Well!

Only one gun sensor may be plugged in at a time, otherwise a start signal will not be received by the camera
