Permanent Installations

Power

Power is required at each camera location and at the point where the FinishLynx computer will be operated. See the section on Power Management to determine whether you need a UPS.

Start Cable

Start cable can be installed permanently in underground conduit and provide female XLR-3 outlets at any number of start locations. The only electrical requirement is that there is continuity for (and no shorting between) each of pins 1, 2, 3, and the shielding. A single male XLR-3 outlet should be provided near the location of the timer enabled camera. In this way only two short leads are required to connect the gun sensor to the nearest female outlet, and the connection box to the nearby male outlet. For more information, see the section on Start Signals.

Data Cable

When choosing an Ethernet medium, consider the length of cables and the suitability of the cables for the conditions to which they will be exposed. Although 10-Base-T is the preferred medium for data cabling, most 10-Base-T cable is not suitable for installations where conduit will hold water.

Camera Mounting Hardware

Before deciding where to mount your cameras you should read the section on camera locations and lenses. FinishLynx cameras mount on photographic tripod heads, which in turn are mounted on the thread of a 3/8” bolt, which preferably will face vertically. This bolt may be provided by a photographic clamp. For a full list of mounting hardware supplied by Lynx, see the Product List.

What is rated suitable for permanent outdoor installation?

Generally, FinishLynx equipment is not rated suitable for permanent outdoor installation. Your power, start and data cabling may be installed in an outdoor environment if the appropriate quality of cable is used, but mounting hardware, computers, cameras and Ethernet hubs are not suitable for permanent outdoor installation.

What do I do when it rains?

All computers, cameras, hubs and any other electrical devices must be sheltered from the rain. As long as sufficient shelter is provided and there is a clear field of view from the camera, FinishLynx equipment can still be operated in inclement weather.

Outdoor Computer Use

If the FinishLynx computer is being operated outdoors, consideration should be given to providing shelter from the sun as well as the rain. Computer screens are very hard to see in direct sunlight.
