 Windows Network Setup

Potential Uses

An Ethernet network already exists whenever there is one EtherLynx camera and a FinishLynx computer. By adding computers to the existing network, you can:
  • use separate computers to capture and analyze a FinishLynx image
  • interface with a meet management program using files shared over the network

Special Note

Setting up a network requires a basic understanding of Microsoft networking. If you have no experience with Microsoft networks you should read a book on the subject before proceeding. If you choose to proceed, follow every step carefully.

Windows XP - connecting to a Camera.

1.)  Find the icon called My Network Places on the desktop & Right click on it, select Properties.

2.)  Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties (This is your network card which you have installed)

3.)  Assign an IP number to your network card.  To do this select Internet Protocol TCP/IP connection by making it blue & then clicking Properties

4.)  Specify/use the following IP address to be recognized by the camera or by the network.

Once you’ve entered the numbers above click OK. Followed by OK again.

You should now be back on your desktop.  At this point if you’ve already set FinishLynx up properly to your computer you can boot the software and find the camera.

Windows XP - connecting to an Evaluate/Read computer

1.) On your secondary computer find the icon called My Network Places on the desktop & Right click on it, select Properties

Reboot each of the computers.

Now if you would like to verify that there is a connection between the two computers you can use a DOS command which is called PING.

Verifying Connections Between Networked Computers

1. To verify you are connected to the other computer click Start and then Run

2. Type CMD you should get the screen listed below

3. Type the command = ping 192.168.0.10 (This is provided you are on the computer that you assigned the IP number of 192.168.0.5 [the one using the camera] and attempting to connect to 192.168.0.10)

If you get a reply from 192.168.0.10 you have established connection between the two computers.

To setup the evaluate computer to read the images from the Primary Camera computer.

Establish a directory on the Evaluate computer.  To do this, do the following on the evaluate computer.

1. Find the icon on the desktop called MY COMPUTER and double click on it.  Next, click on LOCAL DISK C: you are now viewing the contents of your hard drive.  We are going to create a directory which FinishLynx will use.  So right click on your mouse anywhere inside this box and choose new and folder.  Once you click on folder you will have a new folder appear call it Event Files.

2. Once you have created the folder called Event Files you now have a place where your FinishLynx camera operator can store his files for you to evaluate.

3. Now that you have the Directory called Event Files I would like for you to Right Click on it and choose Sharing and Security.  Select Share this folder and make sure user limit is set to Maximum allowed and Hit Ok.

4. So on the FinishLynx Camera computer (192.168.0.5) Open FinishLynx up and go to File:Options and under the General tab go down to where it says Backup directory and look to the right and click Browse.

You are now going to browse to the Event File directory we just created.

Depending on your computer you may have to expand the My Network Places icon.

5. Navigate through the My Network Places area till you find your other computer and it’s shared out directory called Event Files once you’ve found it click OK.

Capture your event and save it to where you would like.  Remember that the Backup Directory we just set will place a copy of the files in the Event Files directory so your evaluate computer can have it.  You can save it somewhere else on the Primary/Camera computer under event directory.

Go back to your evaluate computer and boot up FinishLynx.  Click on File:Open and look for the Event Files

Windows 98 Configuration

To add a computer to your network, follow these instructions:
  • Install network adapter Use your Device Manager (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> Network Adapters) to confirm that you have installed your network adapter successfully and the device is functioning properly.
  • Install network components Open your network configuration window (Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network -> Configuration). Make sure the following network components are installed: Client for Microsoft Networks, your Ethernet adapter, and TCP/IP. If they are not installed, add them. You do not need any other network components to operate FinishLynx.
  • Create identification Click on the Identification tab. Each computer in your network should have a name that uniquely identifies the computer and all computers should be placed in the same workgroup.
  • Configure TCP/IP Double click the TCP/IP component to enter the Properties window. Specify an IP address. Note that the first three numbers in the IP address should be identical for all computers in your network. The fourth number in the IP address must be unique for each computer and the numbers should be spaced 10 apart (eg. 192.0.2.5, 192.0.2.15, 192.0.2.25….). The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. Click OK.
  • Set up sharing Click on the File and Printer Sharing button. If this computer is the FinishLynx Capture machine make sure both options are turned off, otherwise check both options. Click OK.
  • Reboot Click OK to save your network configuration and agree to have the computer restart.

Create a Network Drive

One directory, on any computer except the FinishLynx Capture computer, can be used as a common directory for all computers on the network. To establish a network drive, follow these procedures:
  • in Windows Explorer, create a new directory on this computer (eg. C:\DATA)
  • right click the directory and select Sharing…
  • specify a share name (eg. as DATA), allow Full Control and click OK
  • in Windows Explorer on each other computer in the network, select Map Network Drive… from the Tools menu
  • specify a drive letter (eg. G:\), specify the share name you just created (eg. \\EVALUATE\DATA), make sure that Reconnect at Startup is checked, and click OK.

Configure FinishLynx and Meet Management Software

To configure the FinishLynx Capture computer, follow these steps:
  • start the FinishLynx software and select Options… from the File menu
  • in the General tab, set the Event Directory as the network drive you just established (eg. G:\)
  • in the Hardware tab, set the Hardware type to Detect
  • in the Database tab, set Data Source to Files
  • set Input and Output directories to the network drive (eg. G:\)
  • set Write LIF file to On
  • click OK

To configure other FinishLynx computers, follow these steps:

  • start the FinishLynx software and select Options… from the File menu
  • in the General tab, set the Event Directory as the network drive you just established (eg. C:\DATA)
  • in the Hardware tab, set the Hardware type to None
  • in the Database tab, set Data Source to Files
  • set Input and Output directories to the common directory (eg. C:\DATA)
  • set Write LIF file to On
  • click OK

To configure meet management software, make sure:

  • the software is set up to output and read files over a network
  • specify the common directory (eg. G:\ or C:\DATA) as the input and output directory

Note Well!

The following are a list of things to be especially wary of:
  • never share a drive on the FinishLynx Capture machine. There is so much disk activity when FinishLynx is capturing images from cameras that sharing the disk will cause problems
  • only one computer should have its Hardware Type set to Detect. All other computers should be set to None. FinishLynx is always looking for additional cameras (except when you are aligning a camera). If more than one instance of FinishLynx is looking for a camera when it is booted there will be an error
  • IP addresses must be well spaced. Cameras are allocated IP addresses by incrementing the last number in the IP address of the FinishLynx Capture computer. If IP addresses are not unique there will be problems
  • If computers are not placed in the same subnet (same first three numbers in the IP address and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0) they will not be able to access the network drive.
