NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Kate Farrington

Lynx System Developers, Inc. brought excitement to the floor of the USAT&F convention in Dallas with the announcement of the release of our latest contribution to the arena of Total Event Management: FieldLynx.

FieldLynx is a powerful software program that runs on a palm-sized computer. It collects and stores data from field events, like high jump and javelin, and disseminates results to data management programs, scoreboards, and the public. Read more about it by clicking here.

Keep your eyes peeled for some more hot new products on the way....

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

1997 World Canoe Championships

This fall we added another World Championship to our resume by providing full results to the 1997 World Canoe Championships.

A timing team armed with Ether-Lynx 2000 and CyberScoreboard headed up north to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Canada), and dazzled officials and spectators alike with a flawless presentation.

Scott Logan, the Executive Director of Sport Nova Scotia and the Chair of the Competition Committee summed it up perfectly: "Without question, the World Canoe Championships recently held in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, were the most efficiently organized and technically supported in terms of results management. I state this as a former national and Olympic coach, having attended just about every major canoeing event in the world since 1985."

"The efficiency of your system and its integration into the broader results management system cannot be overstated. Once running, it almost seemed too easy from the perspective of the observer. There were no discrepancies, delays or errors. Results were to the public within seconds of each race's conclusion and on the internet within a minute. Truly incredible given the traditions of world bodies and their trust in technology."

Our Cyberscoreboard logged hits from nations around the globe as canoe fans tracked the progress of the event from their home countries. We are delighted that all the different aspects of the FinishLynx event management were such a big hit with officials, competitors and fans.

CONVENTION ANTICS Show and Tell around the country

This time of year is marked by the occurrence of many different types of conventions. At the Dallas USAT&F convention among the hoards of coaches and VIP's who descended upon the booth to catch a demonstration of FieldLynx was Doug Padilla, the injured top US distance runner.

Padilla was able to give encouraging news about the progress of his recovery when he stopped by and chatted with Doug DeAngelis, the Lynx President.

At the December High School AD's convention in Nashville, the highlight was a visit to the booth by the amazing FloJo (Florence Griffith Joyner).

FloJo was there with her husband, Al Joyner, and he and Lynx Sales Supremo, Kevin McGill, were soon chatting about the "good old days". While they were talking, FloJo was persuaded to run past the Lynx camera a few times so that we could add her (very stylish) image to our Wall of Frames.

TALKING TO TELEVISION

From Concession Stands to the Jumbotron

More and more FinishLynx customers are displaying their output on television. This is true at all levels of all sports.

At the simplest level are the smaller customers who are simply converting the output from their FinishLynx monitor screens and displaying this output on televisions located around their sport facility.

At the opposite end of the spectrum are the major sporting event producers like the Hong Kong Jockey Club, or the World Cup of Cycling, who are displaying photofinish images on huge scoreboard displays costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Whatever the budget, the thinking is the same: An informed spectator is a happier spectator.

We have heard of High Schools showing FinishLynx at the concession stands so that spectators don't mind leaving the stands to buy food and drinks. The result? Increased takings at the concession stands. . . and crowds of people gathering to watch the FinishLynx technology in action.

As well as the on-site use of television, there is also broadcast television, and - again - FinishLynx is perfectly suited to work in this area. Our product LynxTV has provided on-screen running times to television broadcasts around the globe in both PAL and NTSC formats.

Recently, Bob Shallow of Trans World International had this to say about the relationship between FinishLynx and TV Broadcasting: "You and your staff at Lynx System Developers have had the vision to track TV's course and successfully navigate our impending merger with such items as fully customizable on-screen characters, high quality video photofinish imagery as well as character generator interfacing.

Unlike other technology offerings, FinishLynx systems and personnel not only integrate simply and seamlessly into a TV production, but - most importantly - they work as they should."

Talk to us and see what we can do for your event.

AUTOMATE YOUR FIELD EVENTS WITH FIELDLYNX

The unparalleled data handling speed and accuracy of a FinishLynx system for your field events.

FieldLynx is our latest product. When used with Hy-Tek's MEET MANAGER, it will revolutionize the management of field events in the same way that FinishLynx improved the administration of Track events.

Using FieldLynx couldn't be easier. A single cable connects the unit to the computer running Hy-Tek. Flights lists are downloaded. The unit is taken to the event and the event is scored. Finally, the results are uploaded back to the meet management computer.

POWERFUL, PORTABLE, SELF-CONTAINED

Comes complete with a docking cradle

Despite its small size, the FieldLynx unit is powerful and is compatible with Windows 95 and Windows NT.

FieldLynx will enable you to share information with your meet management computer, scoreboards, announcers, and television production facilities.

A COMPLETE RESULTS SYSTEM... . . . in the Palm of Your Hand

With this hand held computer you can easily connect to a computer running your favorite meet management software.

Despite its small size, Fieldlynx is so powerful it can do many things:

 · List the competitors in an event

 · Keep track of the order of competition

 · Enter results

 · Instant display of current standings

 · Upload the results back to your main computer

 · Display information on a scoreboard

. . .all without anyone retyping any information.

RESULTS FOR ALL

No more isolation for athletes in field events.

When results are entered on an official's clipboard only those who can see that clipboard know who is winning, or what an individual's performances are.

Because of the complexity of the scoring system used in some field events, up until now it has been almost impossible to know the standings of some field events as they progress. With FieldLynx this has all changed. A simple tap on the screen and the powerful internal computer automatically calculates standings.

Couple this with FieldLynx's power to drive scoreboards and infield displays, and it is easy to see why the administration of field events will never be the same again.

SIMPLE OPERATION

Small, weatherproof, and fast.

Data entry is simple and intuitive. As always, the Lynx development team is comprised of people who understand the sport, and thanks to their knowledge a new user will feel confident in just minutes.
